One of the most recognizable symbols of San Antonio, we are proud to release the Rose Window Fiesta Medal by Audrey Haake. In fact, the Rose Window at carved by the noted craftsman Pedro Huízar at Mission San José may be the oldest urban legend in the city of San Antonio. Not in the circular shape that is accustomed to most rose windows in cathedrals, the story goes that Huízar carved it and named it for woman he left in Spain and longed to be with. Winner of the Express News Fiesta Medal Contest for Best Heart-Shaped Medal.
This symbol of San Antonio resonated with Audrey Haake, the director of operations for NIOSA and a lover of our historical architecture. In 2018, Audrey had an incredible sacred heart Fiesta Medal—one of my favorite of Fiesta—and I reached out to collaborate on this one. She draws on her previous theme with the sacred heart in the center of the Rose Window. Two doves of peace appear at the top and the bottom shows flowers in bloom that pay tribute to the name.
Through 2020, one dollar from every sale was donated to Mission San José Catholic Church—please note that this is to the actual congregation and not the national park.
