"Better late than never" is an apt saying for this Papel Picado Dancer Fiesta Medal 2019 by the Texas Provencios. Last year, Mark and family took the Fiesta Medal world by storm with their Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio Accordion, the winner for the first time medal in the Express News contest in 2018. And while we were a little late getting to this idea, it is definitely the Dancer Fiesta Medal definitely has a lot of bling.
Dancing is important in the Provencio family, with his daughters having gone through folklorico programs here in San Antonio. In fact, in 2017 we tried working on a folklorico medal but couldn't get it just right. For 2019, I collaborated with Mark to riff on one of our San Antonio papel picados and produce this medal—he had the brilliant idea to not use any paint and to instead have it incredibly shiny to stand out. Mimicking a delicate sheet of paper, this Papel Picaod Dancer Fiesta Medal is very thin and light. 100 of the gold medals are available, the rest are silver. We'll let you pick which one you like best.
Through 2020, one dollar from every sale was donated to Folds of Honor, an organization that provides scholarships to the children and spouses of fallen and disabled service members. Mark first heard about the organization from a friend who was severely injured in an IED blast in Iraq. She said that while healing one of her biggest worries had nothing to do with her own recovery. She mostly worried about how her daughter would come up with college tuition, as she had taken time off to care for her mom. Folds of Honor stepped up and ended up helping both her daughters when they were ready for college.
