When brainstorming with Alan Bush about his 2019 Fiesta Medal, we knew that we wanted to play around (pun intended) with another retro toy. After all, his 2018 Barrel of Monkeys was one of the most sought after medals last year. SA Flavor is proud to collaborate with Alan again in 2019 with this Etch-a-Sketch Fiesta Medal!
The classic red frame showcases three of the most unique buildings of the evolving San Antonio skyline. Taking center stage is both Alan's and my favorite building: the Tower Life Building finished in 1929. To me, there is no better view in town than heading south on St. Mary's right at the Greyhound bus station—the building is framed exquisitely. We both wanted to highlight this building that is often overlooked when it comes to Fiesta Medals. To the right is the Tower of Americas built for Hemisfair 1968 and to the left we honor the soon-to-open Frost Tower. All together, the trio of buildings show the evolution of the skyline over the past 90 years.
The medal pays homage to the actual toy with all the designs being done with raised metal on top of a cool grey background. We replaced the top of the Etch-a-Sketch with "Viva Fiesta" and the icon that shows the world features the state of Texas with a heart over San Antonio. Through 2020, one dollar from every medal sold will go to benefit Texas Public Radio, a radio station that has provided immense value to both Alan and the community at large.
